Franchisors who are looking for people to join the franchise and help expand their business will not exclude potential franchisees just because they are young; much more important is their enthusiasm, willingness to learn and aptitude to develop as a business owner.
Tom Endean, marketing manager at the British Franchise Association (bfa), said: "Younger people may not have as many years of experience behind them, but the experience they do have may well be enough to prove themselves as professional business people and ideal franchisee candidates."
Many have already done so. At the age of 27, Lisa Tobias is Domino's Pizza's most successful female UK franchisee, having gone from being a gymnast and part time worker in a Domino's store, to owning four stores in Scotland with a combined turnover of over £2 million and a staff of 120. Last year her efforts were rewarded when she won the bronze award in the 2008 bfa Franchisee of the Year Awards.
She said: "I worked my way up through the ranks at Domino's and became a store manager at 19. A couple of years later I won Domino's Manager of the Year Award for the UK and Ireland, and at this point I decided that I wanted to keep on pushing myself and own my own store. I bought my first store when I was 23 and have opened one every year since." (Article initially published in the Daily Express)
In the last 20 years DOR-2-DOR have continued to deliver leaflets for many Pizza companies including Domino's.
